As part of the Minister of Health’s policy to improve the school-based early detection system, a heart disease screening initiative has been launched for first-grade students in the capital city during the 2024-2025 school year. More than 33,900 children enrolled in first grade in Ulaanbaatar City are being screened for heart conditions.
The initial screening involves electrocardiograms (ECGs) to assess heart function, and specialized cardiologists have identified abnormalities in 7,241 of the children. These children were then referred for a second round of screening, including ultrasound diagnostics, where 448 cases of heart disease were confirmed. Among them, approximately 140 children require surgical intervention.
Urgent surgical assistance is being provided by the State Central Third Hospital and the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, with treatment already underway. This screening process will also be implemented for first-grade students across 21 provinces, following the same protocol.
