Flu and respiratory illness reach high levels in UB

The Ministry of Health and the National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) reported that the nationwide influenza and flu-like illnesses are at a moderate level. However, in the capital city, the outbreak of these illnesses has reached a high level. According to the Deputy Director of NCCD, O.Batbayar, “The incidence of colds and flu is particularly high in Ulaanbaatar City and seven provinces. Past week, 277,000 people nationwide sought medical attention, with 7.7 percent of them visiting for flu-like illnesses”. “This represents a 2.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Among those hospitalized across the country, 62.7 percent were admitted due to respiratory infections,” he said.

A significant portion of those affected by acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are children, who account for 71.5 percent of the patients. Among the prevalent infections, “COVID-19”, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza A virus are the most common. Additionally, the bed occupancy rate has increased by 9.2 percent compared to last year. Currently, there are over 1,560 hospital beds being used in Ulaanbaatar’s healthcare facilities, with 81 percent of patients admitted for respiratory diseases.

In light of this surge in respiratory infections, health officials have urged the management of schools and kindergartens to refrain from holding New Year’s celebrations. This precautionary measure aims to prevent further spread of the disease as the winter season continues.

This high level of flu and respiratory infections in Ulaanbaatar and other parts of Mongolia highlights the need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures to curb the spread of these illnesses, especially among children and vulnerable groups. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise the public to take necessary precautions, including vaccination and proper hygiene practices, to protect themselves and others.
