Art that provokes thought and ignites inspiration

The “Thinking 3” exhibition showcases the fifth independent exhibition of renowned Mongolian visual artist and member of the Mongolian Academy of Fine Arts, J.Tolgau. The opening ceremony for the exhibition was organized on November 1 at the Red Ger gallery, and the exhibition will be on display until November 25. This exhibition features a selection of J.Tolgau’s most recent artworks, which reflect his distinctive style and innovative approach.

Prominent art critic, academician, and fellow artist Ts.Tsegmid praises J.Tolgau’s work, noting, “Observing J.Tolgau’s creations, one can see a striking use of vibrant colors and a unique conceptual vision. His modern and innovative artworks stand out from his peers thanks to their profound depth. Each painting showcases remarkable imagination and an unmistakable quest for originality.” He elaborates on the captivating themes within the artist’s pieces, highlighting the artist’s exploration of the intricate connections between humanity and nature, nomadic culture, and historical symbolism. J.Tolgau’s philosophy of art shines through as he translates these elements into visual form, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

As J.Tolgau articulates, “I’m striving to distinguish myself from other artists, which is a sentiment shared by many in our field. This exhibition is aimed at unveiling the perspective that I have and that I want to make it flourish. After organizing multiple exhibitions, I believe audiences are now ready to select their favorite pieces from the displayed artworks. Instead of merely creating art to please others or seeking validation, I aim to reveal my true self and allow visitors the freedom to appreciate my work on their own terms.”

In a fascinating exchange during our conversation, J.Tolgau shared that his name, “Tolgau” translates as “Thinking” in Mongolian. This connection is particularly poignant, as it aligns perfectly with the themes of introspection and contemplation that permeate his work. When asked how this exhibition differs from his previous four independent displays, he responded, “In my earlier exhibitions, I showcased a variety of artworks utilizing three main techniques. However, I’ve come to realize that it’s more significant for me to express my identity and artistic style than just presenting what I believe to be the best pieces. This exhibition is ultimately a reflection of who I am as an artist.”

Highlighting one piece that demanded more skill, time, and dedication, he pointed to the centerpiece of the exhibition, “Light-colored Hawk”. He elaborated, “This animal symbolizes power and strength, and I wanted to capture that essence while also portraying the rich historical ties of the hawk to Mongolian culture. I prefer to draw from my imagination rather than merely replicating what already exists. In this artwork, you can see Burkhan Khaldun Mountain, linking it back to the 13th century. The stone the hawk perches upon features symbols that resonate with that historical period.”

He further explains, “The hawk serves as a guardian of this place and symbolizes peace.” This representation highlights not only the artist’s technical prowess but also his deep connection to Mongolian heritage and natural beauty, making the “Thinking 3” exhibition a significant event for both art enthusiasts and the broader community.

Moreover, J.Tolgau’s exhibition promises to be a transformative experience, inviting audiences to engage with the art in a way that encourages personal reflection and appreciation of Mongolia’s rich cultural tapestry. Through his works, he embodies the very essence of “thinking”, urging viewers to reflect on their own relationship with nature and culture.

At the end of our conversation, he emphasized, “People should engage with art and explore creative works. Often, individuals restrict their imagination and creative thinking by dismissing the notion that ‘I don’t know anything about art, so it’s better not to look at it.’ Yet, I’ve witnessed many enjoying foreign songs and music, even if they don’t fully understand the lyrics.” “The same principle applies to art. I urge everyone to come and experience it. Take a moment to ponder what the artist intended to convey with each piece. If possible, read the explanations or, better yet, approach the artists themselves to ask questions. This interaction can lead to profound reflections and a greater appreciation of the differences in artistic expression,” J.Tolgau highlighted.

The exhibition invites everyone to step into a realm of creativity and inspiration. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in thought-provoking artworks that challenge perceptions and stimulate the imagination. We encourage all art enthusiasts and curious minds alike to visit and experience the unique perspective that each piece offers. By engaging with these artworks, you can uncover new dimensions of meaning and understanding, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse expressions of art. Don’t miss the chance to explore this enriching exhibition and connect with the artistic vision that awaits you!
