President of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh addressed world leaders at Glasgow’s COP26 Climate Change Summit on November 1.
In his speech, President U.Khurelsukh reaffirmed Mongolia’s full support to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the Paris Agreement.
He said, “Mongolia aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of climate change, by 22.7 percent by 2030. With the introduction of new technologies and innovative solutions and the establishment of a sustainable system for green financing, we’re planning to heighten this target to 27.2 percent.”
In order to make a national contribution to the international community’s fight against climate change, combat desertification through economic methods, reduce poverty, protect the public health and improve the quality of life, Mongolia launched a national movement to plant billions of trees, President U.Khurelsukh underscored.
He added, “In this context, Mongolia has decided to spend at least 1 percent of its GDP annually to mitigate effects of climate change and desertification.”
The president also stressed the importance of mutual understanding, cooperation, and courageous actions to fulfill the mission to take responsibility toward nature and pave a green future for future generations, before calling on people all over the world to join forces in this work. As organizers of the summit, Prime Minister of the UK Boris Johnson and Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres greeted President U.Khurelsukh and thanked him for taking the time to attend the summit in-person.
State and government heads of over 130 countries are attending the summit, taking place between October 30 and November 12 within the framework of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference .
The summit aims to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement by further defining the commitments made by countries and gathering financing for measures to be taken to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
