Mongolia marks Victory Day

The Ministry of Defense and the Russian Embassy in Mongolia held a wreath laying ceremony on Monday /May 9/ at the Memorial Complex for Soviet Soldiers on Zaisan Hill and at the Monument for Marshal G.Jukov to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945. Minister of Defense Ts.Tsolmon, Russian Ambassador I. Azizov, Belarusian Ambassador V. Chepurnoi, Kazakhstan Ambassador K.Koblandin and other officials attended the ceremony. “The people of the Russian Federation, or former Soviet Union, played a tremendous role in safeguarding the independence of Mongolia,” said Minister Ts.Tsolmon. “During the toughest days of the World War II, the Mongolian people extended helping hands to them. Our younger generation and youth must respect and move forward the historical ties and friendship between the our two nations.” On Victory Day, the President of Mongolia, Ts.Elbegdorj, tweeted, “Happy Victory Day. It’s our common victory. It was a victory to which Mongolians dedicated everything.” Mongolia marks Victory Day as the two nations have shared strong relation since communist times. The two nations mutually aided one another in times of need. When Chinese forces attacked Mongolia in 1919 to negate its independence from China, the Soviet Red Army helped Mongolia ward off the invasion, and during WWII, Mongolia contributed 500,000 horses, a tank regiment and an Air Force squadron to the Red Army, which were formed on a voluntary basis on donations contributed by Mongolians. Mongolia sent nine trains with ammunition, food supplies and presents for the Soviet servicemen during WWII. Mongolia also delivered around half-a-million tons of meat and 64,000 tons of wool to the Soviet Union.
