Suicide rates decreased

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10, was marked with various activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting mental health. This year, Mongolia embraced the day with the theme “Let’s Change the Conversation About Suicide”, engaging in numerous impactful initiatives. The National Center for Mental Health took the lead by first convening a meeting with media representatives to discuss the responsible and cautious dissemination of information about suicide. The goal is to prevent and protect people from harm by conveying information in a way that reduces risk and raises awareness.

It is commendable that Mongolia observed this day with a decrease in suicide rates. According to a study by the National Center for Health Development, the rate of suicide in 2023 decreased to 1.5 per 10,000 people. This represents a notable reduction of 48 cases compared to 2022. This progress underscores the effectiveness of ongoing mental health initiatives and public awareness efforts in mitigating the risk of suicide.

Moreover, this decrease reflects a broader, positive shift in public attitudes towards mental health and suicide prevention. The focus on responsible media coverage, coupled with community-based support programs, contributes to a more informed and supportive environment. By continuing to prioritize mental health and implement evidence-based strategies, Mongolia is making significant strides in addressing the critical issue of suicide and fostering a culture of understanding and support.
