Police officers protect tourists at airports and railway stations

Police officers with dogs and equipment such as handcuffs have started patrolling airports and railway stations. Meanwhile, there are also criticisms that police officers with guns are intimidating.

Explaining the purpose of these patrols and equipment, the National Police Agency (NPA) said, “In order to ensure the safety of foreigners and tourists coming to Mongolia during summer, police officers have started patrolling at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and Ulaanbaatar Railway in Khushigt Valley from June 2. The police officers will work 24/7 for two months. The purpose of patrol officers is to deliver news, information and recommendations to prevent crime and to ensure safety and order. l”.

The officials of the NPA further elucidated, “When it comes to guns, police officers are patrolling with dogs and with specialized equipment. The specialized equipment does not include firearms. According to the Police Law, the specialized equipment to use when patrolling include handcuffs, batons, guns with rubber and plastic bullets, harnesses, wrap shirts, other restraints, guns loaded with tear gas, asphyxiants, and douches”. Officers will also detect pickpocketing. Therefore, the safety of both domestic and foreign travelers will be insured thanks to the police service.
