Beaver reintroduction project revitalized Tuul River ecosystem

Since 2012, the Environmental Department of the Capital City has been implementing a beaver breeding and reintroduction project with the participation of biologists and researchers. The initiative aims to naturally restore the Tuul River’s water flow and mitigate ecosystem degradation.

As part of the project, a total of 34 beavers from 17 family groups were brought in from Russia and Germany. Over the years, 77 beavers have been released into the upper reaches of the Tuul River and its tributaries, the Zaan and Terelj Rivers. Currently, 41 beavers are being raised at the department’s center for beaver breeding and reintroduction, with a long-term goal of establishing 100 to 150 family groups to ensure a sustainable population.

To monitor the beavers’ adaptation and assess the project’s success, the department regularly conducts observations and studies using automated cameras. This allows for continuous tracking of beaver activity and the health of the river ecosystem.

The public is urged to avoid approaching beavers if encountered near the rivers, as these animals are part of the ongoing conservation efforts. Moreover, any incidents or violations involving beavers should be reported to the hotline at 7272 0303.

The project serves as a vital step toward ecological restoration and showcases the importance of biodiversity conservation and collaborative environmental management.
