Households in flash flood prone areas forced to move

In Ulaanbaatar City, there are 2,316 plots of land in the risk zone of flash floods. As the weather is warming in recent days, the risk of flash floods increases and snowmelt accumulates in large quantities. Due to the fact that snow has started to melt, flash flooding has occurred in 33 locations of 24 khoroos of the capital city, a yellow level of disaster has been declared in those locations, measures to prevent flash flooding have been intensified, and a plan of measures to eliminate the harmful effects is being developed.

In this framework, over 400 employees are carrying out the work of transporting ice from 10 locations where flash flooding occurred with 96 pieces of equipment. In particular, in 11th khoroo of Bayanzukh District, 30 families were affected by the flooding. Therefore, 35 employees, 12 machines and two pumps, and officials from the NEMA, Department of Geodesy and Water Construction, Office of the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar and related departments and offices of Bayanzurkh District have been working and helping those households. At that location, the work of laying canals, pumping the flash flooding, and relocating flooded families is ongoing.

Moreover, the 54 tons of water flooding on the highway have been pumped out. The relevant organizations are working to make canals and drainage in those locations. Professional organizations said that evacuation notices have been repeatedly sent to families in flood-risk areas, and the location to move to is indicated. However, there are various cases where people do not move even though they have received the notices, and after the danger has come, they turn to the emergency agencies. Therefore, the households will be forced to move.
