Movement against offshore account holders in motion

The United Movement Against Offshorers demanded President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj and Speaker of Parliament M.Enkhbold to take action to combat offshore account holders. During Thursday’s press conference, co-organizer of the movement B.Batsaikhan stated, “A year ago, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists disclosed data on offshore companies. Yet, the Mongolian state hasn’t made a step forward in this manner since. Hence, our united movement now demands the President and Speaker of Parliament to actively fight against offshore account holders.” “Offshoring is political corruption. Many nations were destroyed due to corruption. The state is obliged to protect Mongolia from this danger,” Head of the Liberal Federation of Senior Citizens of Mongolia G.Baasan said. “Offshoring leads to poverty, hunger, and debt. Why has a group of politicians opened offshore accounts? We believe it’s highly possible that they sold off the natural wealth of Mongolia and made trades using projects and funds from other countries.” The movement petitioned to have S.Bayar, who reportedly has an offshore account, resign from his position as the Ambassador of Mongolia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. They also demanded that former Prime Minister S.Bayar be investigated, and demanded explanation for the delay in former Deputy Speaker of Parliament S.Bayartsogt’s criminal case for having an offshore company and a secret Swiss bank account. They asked Speaker M.Enkhbold to recall all Members of Parliament that have ties to an offshore company and secret accounts using and urged that he submit the proposal to Parliament by April 10. Reportedly, members of the United Movement Against Offshorers will visit the State Palace on April 12 to hear the President and Speaker’s response. Last week, the movement protested against politicians with offshore accounts at Sukhbaatar Square, claiming that the means by which they obtained such accounts were related to corruption. Protesters and the media were surprised to see Head of the Mongolian People’s Party N.Enkhbayar join the demonstration as he has previously been charged with corruption and pardoned by President Ts.Elbegdorj.
