Personal data protection discussed with UN Special Rapporteur

J.Zoljargal, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Innovation and Digital Policy of the Parliament, met with Ana Brian Nougreres, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy, to discuss key issues surrounding privacy, personal data protection, and technology in Mongolia.

During the meeting, Chairman J.Zoljargal provided an overview of Mongolia’s progress on several important laws, including the Law on Personal Data Protection, the Law on Cybersecurity, and the Law on Digital Signatures. He also addressed concerns regarding public surveillance on social media, internet accessibility, and the use of emerging technologies such as Starlink devices.

Special Rapporteur Ana Brian Nougreres shared her intention to conduct a comprehensive study on the protection of personal data in Mongolia. She outlined her focus on healthcare information, cybersecurity, monitoring practices, and the safeguarding of personal data, particularly for vulnerable groups. Furthermore, Nougreres expressed her support for the "Human Rights and Technology" study led by the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia, offering her expertise and feedback. As part of her visit, she also plans to hold a press conference to present her initial findings and observations.

The discussions highlighted the growing importance of balancing technology and human rights in an increasingly digital world, with both parties expressing a commitment to strengthening privacy protections in Mongolia.
