Winter Horse Festival to promote history and culture of Mongolia

The annual Winter Horse Festival for safeguarding the Mongolian nomadic lifestyle and intangible cultural heritage will take place in Batnorov soum of Khentii Province on November 4 and 5, under the support of the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office. During the event, visitors will have the chance to see traditional methods for herding horses and watch competitions between horsemen. Munkh Khariltsaa NGO has been organizing this festival since 2015. This year, 2,000 horses of notable trainers in Ulaanbaatar and provinces are expected to be gathered at the festival. Five horse herders from Inner Mongolia will participate in the festival also. In addition to uurga (lasso pole) contests and the presentation of prizes for the best and the bravest horse herders of the festival, the event will include a horse ballad singing competition, racing, a photo exhibition, and equestrian performances. The founder of the festival and head of Munkh Khariltsaa NGO, E.Tserenbat, said, “Looking at international experiences, we can attract tourists after organizing any event for at least five consecutive years. Tourists from over 10 countries have registered to attend the Winter Horse Festival. This is great news for Mongolia. This shows that our event is already fulfilling its purpose -- to develop winter tourism in Mongolia. Rural artisans will display their handmade products, souvenirs, and handcrafts during the festival in order to offer the traditional arts to tourists.”
