The conference was organized by the International Association for Mongol Studies, Institute of History and Archaeology of the Mongolian Academy of Science (MAS), National Library, Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Bogd Khan Palace Museum, and Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum. Opening remarks were presented by MAS President D.Regdel and secretariat of the International Association for Mongol Studies S.Chuluun, followed with a presentation about the connection of Kangyur and Mongolian scripts by Russian academic K. V. Alekseev. During the event, 36 researchers from Mongolia, Russia, China, Germany, Poland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the USA, and the UK had a heated debate about the Kangyur (The Translation of the Word), an ancient encyclopedia and sutra written by ancient gurus in Tibet and India. The Kangyur is said to have been written by Mongolians in 1819 on black paper with inks made from nine precious jewels, namely gold, silver, coral, pearl, mother of pearl, turquoise, lapis lazuli, copper and steel. The Mongolian government listed the Kangyur as a rare religious and cultural heritage in 2002 and it was entered into UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2013. The ancient encyclopedia is made up of 108 books that consist of 1,161 Buddhist scripts. As part of the international conference, the “Zarlig Erdenii Mongol Soyol” cultural exhibition will open on July 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the National Library, and an exhibition of studies on the Kangyur by Mongolians will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum.
