Raising awareness on World Diabetes Day

The State Central Third Hospital has announced that it will hold an open house on Monday on World Diabetes Day for people with diabetes and to highlight areas for prevention and treatment. The open house will focus on eye health and early diagnosis of diabetes. A small awareness raising measure will be organized to bring attention to diabetes, its symptoms, challenges faced by people with diabetes, methods for treating diabetes and managing complications related to the eye, foot and kidney caused by diabetes. The theme of World Diabetes Day 2016 is “Eyes on Diabetes”. The year’s activities and materials will focus on promoting the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications. Participants can get their body mass index (BMI) calculated after getting their weight and height measured and have their blood pressure checked by doctors. Based on BMI and blood, doctors will evaluated each individual’s risks of diabetes and provide consultation at the State Central Third Hospital. Mongolia versus World Prevalence of Diabetes Mongolia versus World Prevalence of Diabetes[/caption] Diabetes is a huge and growing burden in the world with 415 million adults registered as living with diabetes in 2015, and this number is expected to increase to around 642 million, or one in 10 adults, by 2040. In many countries, diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation. International studies say that up to 70 percent of type 2 diabetes, a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high, can be prevented or delayed by adopting healthier lifestyles. There were 96,000 reported cases of diabetes in Mongolia in 2015 and diabetes prevalence was recorded highest among adults aged between the ages 65 and 75, according to the Global Diabetes Scorecard designed to track the progress governments are making on addressing diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
