Public transportation fare increase sparks controversy over service issues

As of February 1, the public transportation fare in Ulaanbaatar was raised to 1,000 MNT. Officials explained that the fare increase was necessary as it had remained unchanged since 2014. They assured the public that passengers would be able to take four bus rides per day for the new fare. However, this promise has not materialized in practice, drawing criticism from commuters.

Passengers have reported various technical issues hindering the use of the promised multiple ride system. Some bus stops lack card charging devices, and many buses have malfunctioning card readers at the exit doors. Without successfully scanning their cards when alighting, passengers are unable to transfer to other buses without paying an additional fare. As a result, instead of enjoying multiple rides for 1,000 MNT, commuters find themselves paying for every single trip, causing widespread frustration.

In response, the Public Transport Department of the capital city has advised passengers to download the “UB Card” mobile application or purchase physical cards for more convenient use. Starting next month, time-based travel cards will be discontinued. By using the mobile app, passengers can scan their virtual cards on the front card reader when boarding, which will automatically allow up to three transfers without the need to scan again when alighting.

Since the fare increase, 23 complaints have been submitted regarding malfunctioning card readers at bus exits. According to Ulaanbaatar Smart Card LLC, these issues have been resolved. Nevertheless, officials urged passengers to report any future malfunctions by calling 7004-4040 or 7015-1289.

The capital city’s efforts to modernize the public transportation payment system are aimed at enhancing passenger convenience. However, technical glitches and incomplete implementation have left many commuters questioning the effectiveness of the recent fare adjustment. Authorities face mounting pressure to ensure a reliable service that aligns with their promises.
