G.ARIUNTUYA: Racing without injuries is crucial to bring joy to audience

Mongolia’s off-road motorsport scene in the UAZ category features only one female competitor, G.Ariuntuya. Known for her pink UAZ with the number 84, she has earned recognition for her skills and achievements. While many aspire to take up this sport, few persevere, as it demands patience, intuition, intelligence, and financial investment. Excelling in this challenging world of adventure and complexity is no easy feat. G.Ariuntuya has competed alongside champions in events such as “Auto Rally”, “Master Cross”, and “Baja 250”. Listing all the awards she has won would take up an entire newspaper page. Beginning her sports journey in a field where few dare to tread, she is a second-generation athlete. Her father, Ts.Ganbat was one of the pioneers in the UAZ category in the mid-1990s. He encourages his daughter to overcome fear, race safely, and maintain courage, resilience, and resourcefulness. With each competition, she has gained experience and now ranks among the best. We spoke with her to learn more about her journey.

It has been 10 years since that race where you proved that not only men but also women could excel in motorsport. How do you reflect on that time?

For me, racing was a way to inspire girls and women. Time has flown since that day I first lined up at the starting line. Over the years, I’ve learned from champions, gained experience, and developed myself. Along the way, I’ve faced many challenges but am proud to have overcome them.

Looking back at the trail you’ve blazed for UAZ vehicles in motorsport, could you share some memorable moments?

I began my career as a racer by participating in the ice track racing competition in the jeep category, organized by the Mongolian Offroad Federation. That event gave me the confidence and courage to compete in the Mongolia-China international long-distance “Gobi Rally.” Later, I took part in the skill-intensive “Baja Mongolia” competition, where I learned a lot from the techniques of champions. However, deep down, I secretly dreamed of competing in the UAZ category of the “Master Cross.” In 2016, I raced in that category for the first time. Comparing the Ariuntuya of that time to now, I’ve significantly improved my technical knowledge of vehicle components and honed my racing techniques.

There are many factors that bring luck and success to racers. Spectators now eagerly await the sight of the pink UAZ crossing the finish line.

You’ve won several medals from the “Chinggis Master Cross” held in Darkhan-Uul Province. Your pink UAZ has become iconic. How did you decide on the color?

When I purchased the yellow UAZ from B.Batzorig, who competes with car number 02, he asked, “What color would you like me to paint it? I’ll paint it in any color you choose.” I initially said, “Black.” However, he advised, “Black doesn’t suit a woman’s racing car. Choose another color.” So, I chose pink and even had my racing outfit made to match by the mother of State Honored Athlete D.Boldbaatar. This UAZ with number 84 has brought me many victories. When I had to choose a number for the race, only 14 and 84 were left. Since then, I’ve competed in many events with this number.

Motorsport enthusiasts often mention that you are one of the most highly educated racers. Is it true that you studied and graduated from three universities while racing?

Yes, it’s true. While actively participating in races, I pursued and completed studies at three higher education institutions. During my studies for a master’s degree in public administration management at the National Academy of Governance, I participated in over 10 competitions. Despite being busy with preparations and races, I managed to complete my studies successfully. My research supervisor, Dr. L.Otgontuya encouraged me by saying, “Excel in both your studies and racing. The busier you are, the more you can achieve.” Prior to that, I had studied in Japan during high school. Upon returning to Mongolia, I enrolled in the School of Economics at the National University of Mongolia (NUM) and specialized in budgeting and public finance. Later, I pursued part-time studies in English translation at NUM’s School of Mongolian Language and Culture. These qualifications have been incredibly useful in every step of my journey. Leveraging my professional and language skills, I have even collaborated with international researchers on various projects.

The Dakar Rally is one of the most captivating events for motorsport enthusiasts, and it’s currently underway. I’m sure you follow it closely as well.

One of the races I am most fascinated by is the Dakar Rally. This event, which takes place in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, usually starts late at night in Mongolian time. I’ve been staying up to watch the International Master of Sports P.Murun cross the finish line in the motorcycle category, feeling both excited and proud.

Do you dream of racing across the vast terrains of such a prestigious competition?

I believe that one day, I will fulfill my dream and compete there. I greatly admire the courage and skill of female racers participating in this competition. Among them is Spain’s champion, Laia Sanz, who previously competed in the motorcycle category at the Dakar Rally. Now retired from motorcycle racing, she is participating in the car category this year. My ultimate goal in motorsports is to take part in this legendary race. Competing in the “Master Cross” races has been a stepping stone toward achieving that dream, and I am continuously preparing myself for it.

The rugged terrains, rocky paths, and sand dunes remind me of Mongolia’s roads.

The athletes who participate in “Baja Mongolia,” a long-distance off-road race, are no less experienced than those competing in the Dakar Rally. Some Mongolian racers even train for sand dune conditions in the Gobi Desert in Umnugovi Province. The geographic location, climate, and weather in Saudi Arabia are quite similar to Mongolia’s autumn season, which might give our athletes an edge. However, motorsports are prestigious and come with high costs. In foreign countries, racers focus solely on their competitions, dedicating resources and goals toward them. Meanwhile, Mongolian athletes have to cover expenses out of their own pockets, making participation financially challenging. I hope that this sport receives more policy-level support in the future.

Injuries and accidents are almost inevitable in the world of sports. I assume you’ve faced such challenges as well.

For me, 2022 was a challenging year both physically and mentally. The following year, while competing in “Baja Mongolia,” I injured my right wrist. As an auto sports athlete, staying injury-free is essential to handle the steering wheel of the UAZ in the “Master Cross” races. Due to my injury, I had to follow a strict recovery regimen and take several months off from competing. During that time, I felt how much the audience missed me. While recovering, I told myself, “I won’t just sit idly. I’ll use this time to work on my finances. I may not be able to control the wheel yet, but I can definitely master the pen.” This mindset kept me motivated. When I recovered and returned to the racing scene, the fans warmly welcomed me back.

The “Master Cross” is highly competitive, with over 70 racers vying for victory. Competing head-to-head with such skilled athletes requires immense courage, patience, and expertise. The cheers of my loyal fans, especially during races, significantly boost my performance. Among all, the “Chinggis Master Cross” held in Darkhan-Uul Province stands out due to its massive audience. Over 100,000 spectators gather there, watching the races with great excitement. While the sport involves high risks, the priority is to race safely and bring joy to the spectators.

Athletes often say most of their expenses go towards maintaining their vehicles. How do you manage all of that?

My UAZ vehicle is heavy and tall, making it less competitive compared to other vehicles. According to the rules, racers must use 92 engines. However, Russian engines are also manufactured in the USA and China. Keeping up with technical advancements naturally brings financial challenges. To participate in races, meticulous planning is required well in advance.

Auto and motorcycle racing are inherently high-risk sports. Competing in the UAZ category is even tougher. Success often comes with achieving high speeds, as they say.

My family has always been closely connected to auto sports, so they understand and support me. I noticed their initial worries when I first entered the sport, but now they are my most loyal supporters. My father was one of the pioneers of auto sports in Mongolia. From 1996 to 2000, he competed in the UAZ category of the “Batkhuleg” races. As a child, I would sit in the cab of my father’s car and never missed a single one of his races. My father has been a pillar of support in my journey of racing UAZ vehicles. Even now, he advises me to prepare myself physically and mentally and to prioritize safety during races.

I didn’t start racing in a rush of excitement or recklessness. I became an athlete at an age where I carefully plan and calculate everything. That’s why I know how to continue my career and when to stop. One day, I will retire, and when I do, I aspire to be a good homemaker and mother.

Could you share some of the goals you aim to achieve in 2025?

In addition to participating in this year’s series of competitions, I plan to compete in the “Master Cross” and “Baja Mongolia” multi-terrain off-road races. Athletes don’t prepare for events like the “Dakar Rally” with just two months of training. They spend at least two years preparing their vehicles. This rally is my dream, and I am determined to make it a reality. I have gained significant experience by competing in the “Baja 250” races over the years. Initially, I learned from the best, but now I am focused on refining my racing strategies and improving the components of my vehicle.
