Preparation underway for PISA assessment

Mongolia is gearing up to continue its participation in the “PISA 2025” (Programme for International Student Assessment). As stipulated in the General Education Law, which states that “the quality of education shall be assessed by an internationally recognized organization every three years”, the country is preparing for this assessment organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

To facilitate this preparation, the Education Evaluation Center launched an online training program aimed at familiarizing participants with international research methodologies and tasks, as well as disseminating the results of past assessments. This training ran until the end of October and was conducted in a regional format. It involved education professionals from provincial and the capital city education offices, including specialists responsible for assessment and curriculum, as well as teachers of subjects such as chemistry, physics, biology, geography, mathematics, information technology, Mongolian language and literature, and foreign languages.

The international assessment is scheduled to take place in April 2025. Notably, approximately 1,500 students aged 15 from both public and private schools, as well as vocational education institutions, were involved in a computer-based assessment earlier this month. This assessment evaluated their skills in natural sciences, mathematics, and reading comprehension.

The primary objective of participating in PISA is to assess the quality of Mongolia’s education system on an international scale, measuring students’ academic achievements and competencies. PISA plays a critical role in enhancing educational quality worldwide by providing valuable insights for countries to improve their educational policies and systems. Through its participation, Mongolia aims to gain insights that will help drive improvements in its educational sector, ultimately enhancing the quality of education for its students.
