New park to enhance residents’ leisure time

The construction of a new park on the site of the former Urt Tsagaan Shopping and Service Center began. When asked about the timeline for the completion of the project, officials stated, “We have officially commenced the Urt Tsagaan Park project. We plan to complete the construction work on the buildings and infrastructure within this year. The landscaping and park development will begin in March 2025, with the goal of opening the park to the public by summer.”

The Urt Tsagaan Shopping and Service Center, located in the third khoroo of Chingeltei District, was initially constructed between 1958 and 1961 as part of a city-owned development project. Since its inception, the building had never undergone any significant repairs or renovations, leading experts deem it at risk of collapse. Between 2011 and 2019, professional inspection authorities issued eight warnings, recommending the immediate demolition of the building to prevent potential injuries to the public. These warnings highlighted the urgency of addressing the deteriorating structure, which had become a public safety concern.

Following these recommendations, a public consultation was held to gather input from local residents regarding the future of the site. An overwhelming 96 percent of respondents supported the idea of transforming the area into a public park. In response to this strong public support, the building was demolished last January, and the land was cleared for redevelopment.

The cleared 1.3-hectare site will soon be transformed into a green oasis featuring an underground parking facility and extensive greenery, as per the wishes of the local community. The design, which was completed last May, includes a three-story service center, both open and underground parking areas, an open-air theater, bicycle parking, and a fountain. This development is not just a response to a safety hazard but a commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable urban space that meets the recreational and social needs of the community.

The creation of this park is part of a broader vision to enhance urban living in Ulaanbaatar City by increasing the availability of public green spaces. It aims to provide a place where residents can relax, engage in outdoor activities, and enjoy events in a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment. As the capital city continues to modernize, projects like this reflect a growing emphasis on improving the quality of life for its citizens by integrating nature into the urban landscape. This park, once completed, will stand as a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable development and community well-being.
