Brown bears appear in residential areas

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a warning regarding the increasing number of incidents involving brown bears entering residential areas and approaching herders’ land. Particularly in forested areas in provinces like Selenge and Darkhan-Uul, such occurrences have been reported multiple times this summer. Consequently, the ministry advises residents to promptly notify if a bear is sighted in residential areas and to ensure that children are not left unattended or sent to herd livestock. It is also recommended that people maintain the functionality of vehicles and communication devices. The ministry has instructed local authorities to take precautionary measures, including mapping out the locations of herder households living in high-risk areas, as well as the migration routes of the bears. These authorities are also tasked with setting up warning signs and potentially relocating vulnerable herder families.

Therefore, provincial and local working groups should map out the locations of herders and residents near bear habitats and identify the migration routes of the bears to take urgent response measures, and relocate affected herder families from the area if bears repeatedly cause damage to livestock, property, or pose a risk to human life. Moreover, residents should gather in a central location if relocation is not possible, ensure the full functionality of vehicles, motorcycles, and mobile phones, and avoid killing bears or chasing them with vehicles, motorcycles, or horses if a bear is observed wandering but does not pose an immediate threat.
