Accidents involving scooter and bike surged

In recent years, there has been a concerning trend of increased accidents and injuries related to scooters, electric bikes, and pedal bicycles. Data reveals a sharp rise in such incidents. For example, in 2022, there were 96 reported cases, which escalated to 229 in 2023, where individuals sustained injuries from falls or collisions involving these types of vehicles, necessitating medical service. Moreover, in the first seven months of this year alone, the National Traumatology and Orthopedics Research Center recorded 178 such cases.

Moreover, the rising use of scooters and bicycles among children and adolescents has been accompanied by a notable increase in severe injuries. Medical professionals and specialists have observed a higher incidence of traumatic brain injuries, bone fractures, limb breaks, contusions, and internal injuries to the chest and abdomen among the youth. The lack of adequate bike lanes in the capital city exacerbates the risk. In addition, the absence of specific regulations governing the use of electric bikes and scooters on pedestrian and vehicular roads contributes to the frequency of these accidents. Reports indicate numerous incidents where riders have collided with vehicles, struck barriers, fallen into potholes, or experienced other types of accidents. Pedestrians have also been injured by such vehicles.

Therefore, the health authorities strongly advise the use of protective gear while riding. They emphasize the importance of remaining attentive and avoiding distractions, such as using mobile phones, headphones, or tablets, to ensure the safety of oneself and others on the road.
