Water accidents surge

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that they are starting to operate boat patrols along the Kherlen, Terelj and Tuul rivers from today. The patrols aim to prevent citizens from river and water accidents. In accordance with the order No. A/656 of the Governor of the Capital City and the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar on measures to be taken to prevent river and water accidents, the joint team of the NEMA, Police Agency, and the Authority for Family, Child, and Youth Development are performing their duties according to the schedule. Boat patrols work to ensure the safety of citizens in the area from the Kherlen River in Baganuur District to Khadan Khoshuu and Terelj River, and from Khar Usan Tokhoi in Bayanzurkh District to Khadan Khysaa in Khan-Uul District.

Moreover, this is the 14th year the boat patrols are deployed and they will serve and operate until September 15.

During a time period of the first eight months of 2023, there were a total of 53 calls related to water accidents registered in five districts of the capital city, and 42 soums of 16 provinces. Due to those accidents, 49 people died, of whom 14 were children and 35 adults. The main cause of death due to water accidents is because of carelessness, such as leaving children by themselves along the banks of the river, drinking alcohol and entering the river with improper flotation devices. Therefore, NEMA warns citizens to follow the instructions and advice given by professional organizations. Citizens should be alert and vigilant when traveling near rivers, and lakes, should not let children play along the banks of the river, should not use non-standard boats, and inflatable mattresses. Also, avoid possible river and water accidents by not driving on unsafe bridges, crossing, or passageways.
