National Library of Mongolia moves to new building

National Library of Mongolia is closed until May 1. This decision was made due to the commissioning of the new library building. Therefore, about 534,000 books and publications will be moved to the new building within two months.

The chief librarian, T.Bayarlakh said, “In the new building, services will be provided in accordance with international library standards. Modern books will be transferred to this building, which is expanding the services of the National Library of Mongolia. Books and publications will be transported by specially equipped vehicles, meeting the conditions of guarding according to the instructions and plans.” The librarian then continued, “The work is planned to be carried out in cooperation with the General Authority for Border Protection of Mongolia. Library services are closed in order to complete the short-term installation of furniture and equipment for the new building. The new library, which will open next May, has 530 seats and 16 specialized reading rooms.”

On the other hand, the information that some government organizations, including the President's Office, will be located in the old building of the library has spread online. Regarding this, T.Bayarlakh said, “In the main building of the library, rare and old books and scriptures will stay. We will keep the tradition of serving people of all ages in the field of science and research.”

The National Library of Mongolia’s current building was built in 1951 to store 500,000 books and serve readers. The capacity of the library was exceeded seven times over, therefore a new branch was decided to be built, and the construction of a new building was started in 2008. The extension building had been built by AKMI Holding LLC since 2012. However, the company failed to fulfill the contractual obligations and complete the construction work on time. As a result, the construction work has been handed over to the Aspiration for Peace LLC, and it is now ready to be put into operation.
