Colder weather with snow storms occurs in most areas

Emergency Department of the Capital City and other officials informed about the prevention of hailstorms and flash floods due to the drastic changes in climate. On this occasion, the chief engineer of the current flow and long-term forecast research department of the Institute of Water, Climate Environmental Research and Information, B.Jargalan said "Due to the climate change, the frequency of catastrophic events has increased recently. In particular, as a result of the increase in the frequency of heavy rains in the previous summer which was more than normal, floods happened more than once in July and August. Also, the water level of the Selbe River increased and the amount of soil water increased. As a result, the phenomenon of soil water breaking through the ice in the Selbe River in winter can cause flooding.”

She then continued, “On account of global warming, the severe change in climate appears in Mongolia. For example, although it was above freezing in the Gobi region during winter, it turned out to be colder than the average for many years, reaching minus 50 degrees in some mountainous regions in January. Furthermore, this winter, a lot of snow fell and 80 percent of the entire area of Mongolia was covered with snow. Even in Ulaanbaatar City, the amount of snow cover is still more than before.” “Please be warned that the amount of snow during this time of hailstorm increases the possibility of floods when the temperature suddenly warms up. On February 15 and 16, it warms up sharply in Arkhangai, Bayankhongor, Dornogovi, Dundgovi, Govi-Altai, Khovd, Tuv, Umnugovi and Uvurkhangai provinces. Thus, a colder weather with snowstorm is expected to be in most areas on February 16, in the northern part of the region, on February 17. Because of this, there is a high risk that the current situation of flooding will get worse." says B.Jargalan.
