At 12:50 a.m. on September 8, a magnitude 5 earthquake shook Kharankhui area in Bayanbulag bag of Jargalant soum in Tuv Province. The quake was intensely felt by residents in across the country, especially Ulaanbaatar and Tuv Province.

Even though many city residents were terrified by the quake, the emergency alarm didn’t go off because the level of shock wasn’t at dangerous level, emergency organizations explained. The earthquake occurred 124 kilometers northwest of Ulaanbaatar, 178 kilometers northwest of Tuv Province’s center and 18 kilometers northeast of Jargalant soum center.

According to the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the quake was felt in Ulaanbaatar with a magnitude of 3 to 4. The National Emergency Management Agency reported that the quake was felt strongly in Ulaanbaatar; Bayannuur, Bulgan, Buregkhangai, Dashinchilen soums of Bulgan Province; Darkhan and Shariin Gol soums of Darkhan-Uul Province; Bayangol, Yuruu, Zuunburen, Orkhon, Mandal, Javkhlant, Saikhan, Sant and Tsagaannuur soums of Selenge Province; Khushaat, Khuder, Khutul, Shaamar, Bayan-Undur soums of Orkhon Province; Altanbulag, Argalant, Bayankhangai, Bayanchandmani, Batsumber, Bayantsogt, Bornuur, Zaamar, Zuunmod, Jargalant, Lun, Undurshireet, Sergelen, Sumber, Ugtaaltsaidam, Tseel soums of Tuv Province. However, no damages were reported.

In addition, at 10:16 a.m. on the same day, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred 21 kilometers west of Jinst soum of Bayankhongor Province. Local residents felt the quake, but no damage was reported.

At 8:28 a.m. on September 7, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit Bayanzurkh bag of Ulaankhus soum in Bayan-Ulgii Province. Citing reports by the head of the soum mayor’s office, National Emergency Management Agency said that no tremors were felt and no damage was reported.

Since the beginning of 2021, earthquakes of magnitude 3 to 6.7 have been recorded in eight provinces of Mongolia. A magnitude 3 to 4 earthquake can be felt by humans, and those with magnitude above six magnitude can damage buildings. Earthquakes exceeding magnitude 10 can cause buildings to collapse, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.
